Monday’s with Jessica [Ep 89]: A Typical Week

This past week has felt the most ‘normal’ if that’s a word I can use to describe my times here in Dunedin. I’ve been able to keep up to date with my study and have also continued to complete my training as planned. With my new focus on my 10km race in Christchurch in only 4 weeks it’s allowing me to have a few weeks of pure uninterrupted training with extra races I seem to be picking up recently.

A few weeks ago Ray set my training to have a rest day on Monday, followed by a double training day of a cycle indoor training on Velocity followed by a 60 minute run. Due to my schedule with uni, I am at uni until 9pm at night so all my training is too be done in the morning, but I’m sure there is some benefits to having back to back trainings, but this means I am focusing on resting and fuelling properly to replenish after a big morning, followed up with a mentally long day.

Getting the right food has been a slight struggle with my halls, as it’s not exactly what I want, so I am trying to work with the kitchen to try to best suit what I need but also understand it’s never going to be as good as if I did it myself.

On Wednesdays I just have a nice and smooth swim which is really nice, and a nice way to set my day up, with then my key run session on Thursday and another swim Friday. Ending the week with double day long trainings running and cycling.

This is only my current plan and it may be subject to change with a few added types of training like partaking in the parkrun each Saturday, either way the balance of training has been almost perfect with my study able to not over do one type or another keeping it exciting day in and day out.

It’s quite strange as my long runs have began to feel, maybe not easier but more comfortable and mentally easier the more I do them. When I look back at the start of my training journey to today it scares me how far I really have come, but its nice to reflect and appreciate all the effort I have put in to say I comfortably run 26km every Saturday and then go about my day.

A mixture of fuelling and endurance is what it comes too as both have been what I’ve focused on primarily through the swimming, cycling and running. When I first started my 1-1.5 hour runs would drain me needing a nap and resting for the rest of the day.

So whenever I feel down on my ability its good too look back and appreciate the distance I truely have come. Dunedin has continued to supply me with lots of social outing with another rugby game this past Friday and lots of events throughout the week set up by various uni club 🙂
