Brick sessions develop your ability to complete multiple disciplines in a single event. Transitioning from one discipline to another requires a number of different things to occur in the body but a key transition is in the blood flow from the cycling muscles to the running muscles. For a swim to bike transition, you also go from a horizontal position to a vertical position with a corresponding increase in blood pressure to ensure the blood can easily get to the brain. This workout is a great race simulation that is perfectly aligned for Ironman 70.3 and Ironman athletes preparing for a key race.

Matt Mcelroy is an elite, American triathlete with a dozen podiums at World Cup events and a silver medal at the Pan Am Games. This Brick session forces you to focus on both the speed of the transition and the speed out of T2 to start the run well. This session is great for sprint and Olympic distance triathletes.

Lionel Sanders is a top tier Ironman and Ironman 70.3 athlete. He has won the ITU Long Course World Championships, four Ironman titles (as well as two podium finishes at the World Champs), and 31 Ironman 70.3 titles. He is well known for his solid indoor training sessions and for being his own most harshest critic, as well as sharing it all on his social media. This brick workout he has done a week and a half out from Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant. However, for recreational athletes I’d recommend this is done 3-8 weeks out from your key event.

Dr. Matt Brick was a legendary duathlete in the 1990’s winning the World Championships (using the old 10km run / 60km cycle / 10km run format) in 1991 & also in 1992. Brick’s Brick was a staple of his training back then. It provided a number of great training stimuli as it developed qwik transitions from run to bike and also bike to run, especially from fast running to solid bike, and solid bike to fast running. Matt Brick would do these sessions based at an athletic track and use his bike trainer. This sessions is not only great for duathletes but also Sprint and Olympic Distance Triathletes.
