The break finally arrived and I couldn’t have been more happier, this year for my uni our mid semester break was 1-2 weeks later than usual due to the line of Easter being later this year. Even though the break was here, that didn’t mean the work didn’t stop. With all my recent mid term exams I was in need to catching up on lecture notes in all areas, while most uni students went home straight away I stayed back a while longer allowing me to be able to completely catch up on my work without any distractions and for when I did go home to not be so overwhelmed with the pressure too.

Monday’s with Jessica [Ep 94]: From Stress to Rest
From stress to rest is what I put this last week into being. Coming into this week I had just raced in Christchurch on the Sunday and woke up early the next Monday to start my road trip home to Dunedin to make my 11am class, safe to say by the end of the trip my bum was more than sore and I was ready for the walk into class, but not the sitting obviously.

This past week has been non-stop and managing everything was definitely a learning curve. Coming into the week I knew I had a lot on my plate and trying to balance what I knew was coming was daunting. Starting on monday I was completely sick with a virus, struggling with brain fog and not having sufficient sleep, not a great start to a long week of mid term exams and racing I know… I had been struggling with the cold for almost a week and was hoping it would resolve itself as at first it didn’t seem so terrible, but once I got the point where I couldn’t think, concentrate, remember things, or breath from being fully congested I do have to admit a few break downs were had.

This week had both ends of the scale when it comes to how I felt during training. Coming into the week I had Monday and Tuesday double day training, Monday started off better than ever and although I have to start in the cold dark morning my mental game was awake and ready to push through the negative thoughts of having heavy legs and cold limbs, having a Level III fartlek run was on the cards and pushing through the warming up on the first rep I felt strong through the rest, still having to work but I was ready too and I did.

This week, yet again had lots of new aspects,. Starting off with my new training layout with some new sessions added. For a while now I have wanted to try the double training approach, although I am mostly completing them one after another I also have the option to seperate them to either end of the day, and only do so when it’s 2x runs in a day.

This week was yet another eventful week down here in Dunedin. On Monday we celebrated St Paddy’s and I cannot tell you I have ever seen more students dress up in green than I did then, it was definitely a new experience. I guess I better get used to for the annual event that it is down here. My week’s continue to be full with lectures and study which I have continued to stay on top of, which is definitely hard but achievable if I make sure to structure my week as well as I can.

This past week has felt the most ‘normal’ if that’s a word I can use to describe my times here in Dunedin. I’ve been able to keep up to date with my study and have also continued to complete my training as planned. With my new focus on my 10km race in Christchurch in only 4 weeks it’s allowing me to have a few weeks of pure uninterrupted training with extra races I seem to be picking up recently.

This week I have started to find my feet. Through uni I have tried many new study techniques and ways to keep up to date and try to load the overload of information we are given into my head. Along with my uni I had a bit of different training on Thursday rather than what has seemed like a continuous streak of hill sessions. I was lucky enough to have the track and field nationals being held just down the road from my hall at the Caledonian track where I qualified to race the 5000m event.

Another week, another pile of stories to tell. This weeks training has once again been completed fully as it almost perfectly has a year ago in a couple of days, I can remember the exact timing of when multiple major moments in my life happened that helped me grow and learn many valuable lessons. One being that you are the only one who can show up for yourself, time and time again, along with that ever consistent work and dedication you reap the rewards.

A week of normal, settling and overwhelming. How can it be all? This week was officially O-Week for the University of Otago, from balancing college events, uni presentations, more events and raves every night there is definitely no consistency or normality around that. Slowly but surely I have been getting more comfortable in my hall which itself has hosted more activities than any other which makes it feel like a welcoming community, though I am still yet to find a like minded individual athlete and health wise.
